THE BARBER JACKET

The Barber Jacket was created for Tahki Bannister. Tahki started My Cuts Travel which is located in Kansas City, MO. The original concept was he could cut anyones hair anywhere. Now he has a giant warehouse space in the Crossroads in Kansas City, MO. With multiple barbers and a members only club in the back. He still makes house calls as well.

Tahki and I first met in 2014 at the Silver Screen hair salon. Where i started my gallery space with another friend. We came up with a project to cut my hair at the World War 1 museum in KC. Thats how our whole relationship started.

In 2026 I went back to visit my family in kC. i went out with a friend and ran into Tahki at UP Down. we talked about creating him a jacket. we brainstormed the concept right then and there. he gave me full creative control. so i spent the next two months making him the barber jacket.

the entire substrate is made of reclaimed denim. i sewed and patch-worked the entire garment. i painted the entire shell black and white to match his companies colors. but also to unify all the denim. since i used different shades of blue denim. i made a beautiful watercolor affect using goldens gac-900. it thinned down the paint to the consistency i wanted while also making the garment more launder-able. i wanted to add some embroiedery but not use typical barber tools or imagery as inspiration. i deecided on adding his logo to the left chest pocket using my own handwritting. then i came up with the idea of having an electric trimmer as the main embroiered image of the piece. i thought how funny woulld it be if the trimmer plugged into an outlet. so thats what i did lol. i found black macreme cord and used it as the trimmers electrical cord. then i had the idea to use the cord to spell out my cuts travel. i figured out that i could create his name n the back if i used cursive writing. i was able to tie that into the trimmer and outlet no problem. now buttons are always hard to find and match to a jacket. i had the idea to use quarters because they are metal and easy to come by. now i am only going to use coins for every project in the future. i added four pockets. two front welt pockets. two big interier pockets to hold any supplies while working. the best part is that it fit him lol. we never did a test fitting.
