TIC Jacket No. 01 is the first garment in the TIC series. It began as a seven-ounce ungessoed canvas I painted around 2014. Years later, I returned to the work and transformed the canvas into a jacket, allowing the original painting to become both material and structure.
I established the surface with liquid acrylic color, then layered in my original drawings, painted imagery, repeated TIC marks, language about Tourette’s, and details created with acrylic paint and alcohol-based markers. The work developed intuitively, with earlier marks remaining visible beneath later additions.
The back is my favorite part of the jacket. It features one of my drawn characters beside a balloon at the moment before it is popped, accompanied by a lyric from a Radiohead song. The image captures the tension, anticipation, and involuntary movement at the center of the TIC project.
The interior is lined with a jungle-print fabric from my studio, filled with animals and plants. The buttons were selected to echo the orange and black areas of the painted exterior, and two hidden side pockets preserve the clean silhouette.
By transforming an earlier painting into clothing, TIC Jacket No. 01 became the starting point for a continuing body of work about Tourette’s, visibility, and self-expression.
